Um estudo apresentado no último dia 23 no Congresso Europeu de Microbiologia Clínica e Doenças Infecciosas acende um alerta para a possibilidade de que superbactérias sejam transmitidas de porcos para humanos, o que aumenta o problema da resistência aos medicamentos antimicrobianos que já existe atualmente.

Pesquisadores da Universidade de Copenhague e do Statens Serum Institut, na Dinamarca, analisaram amostras da superbactéria Clostridioides difficile em 14 fazendas de porcos no país. Eles descobriram o compartilhamento entre suínos e humanos de vários genes que indicam a resistência a antibióticos, o que indica que a transmissão dos animais para humanos é possível.

A C. difficile é um tipo de bactéria que afeta o intestino humano e pode causar forte diarreia e até a morte. Atualmente, apenas três antibióticos disponíveis são capazes de eliminá-la. "C. difficile é a causa mais comum de colite associada a antibióticos e é tipicamente adquirida em hospital, mas casos adquiridos em comunidades estão aumentando. A diarreia induzida por C. difficile ocorre em até 8% dos pacientes hospitalizados, sendo responsável por 20% a 30% dos casos de diarreia adquiridos em hospital", descreve o Manual MSD de Diagnóstico e Tratamento.

Em 2017, nos Estados Unidos, cerca de 224 mil pessoas foram infectadas por essa bactéria, das quais 12,8 mil morreram. Ela é considerada uma das maiores ameaças à resistência a antibióticos.

“Nossa descoberta de genes de resistência múltiplos e compartilhados indica que a C. difficile é um reservatório de genes de resistência antimicrobiana que podem ser trocados entre animais e humanos. Essa descoberta alarmante sugere que a resistência aos antibióticos pode se espalhar mais amplamente do que se pensava anteriormente e confirma os elos na cadeia de resistência que leva de animais de fazenda a humanos”, afirmou em comunicado o cientista Semeh Bejaoui, um dos autores do trabalho.

A resistência aos antibióticos está diretamente associada a seu uso excessivo na medicina e também na produção de proteína animal. “Este estudo fornece mais evidências sobre a pressão evolutiva relacionada ao uso de antimicrobianos na pecuária, que seleciona patógenos humanos perigosamente resistentes. Isso destaca a importância de adotar uma abordagem mais abrangente para o manejo da infecção por C. difficile, a fim de considerar todas as possíveis vias de disseminação”, conclui o pesquisador.
